“This installation has won the Best Design Award at the Prague Quadrennial 2023 and is based on Örkény István Theatre’s Winterreise performance. The object, created in collaboration with set designer Botond Devich, director Jakab Tarnóczi, and actor Máté Borsi-Balogh, is lifted out of the black box theatre space and becomes a walk-around element of reality, completed by a twelve-channel video installation on the outer surface of the box. Built with meticulous attention to detail in a box open on one side, the space that comes to life thanks to Máté Borsi-Balogh, entering the area from time to time, is in fact a three-dimensional projection of melancholy. In Prague, the actor appeared at precise times in an interior that was at once hyper-realistic and stylised, where he never performed Schubert’s eponymous song cycle in its entirety. He sang only short fragments, while at other times he opened a beer, chewed crisps, lay on the mattress, checked the contents of the fridge or fiddled with his phone. The stages of the solitary journey of a soul locked in a fully equipped cell become identifiable in their fragmentary nature on the screens on the outer walls, creating a tensioning contrast with the interior of the apartment, awaiting human presence for a good part of the time.” Tamás Jászay, curator

REVIEWS
“Through the tension of music, space, and performance, the design creates a desperate existential metaphor. The strengths of the exhibit are the raw performance, the alienated cell and its contents, and the videos that allow the viewers to revisit the performance.”
